Wardley Fish Food
Wardley Fish Food

Why is my betta fish spitting his food out? ?
i bought new food (bettamin -flakes) for my betta fish, ponyo, and he liked eating it instead of wardley betta fish pellets. the first time (yesterday) i gave ponyo flakes he would gobble it up, so i gave him more and more. today, i gave him some and he would have a flake in his mouth and spit it out in pieces. i’m guessing he’s full? if not, please give an answer. just want to make sure he isn’t sick or anything.
Unless he’s acting “off” orshowing signs of illness (color loss, clamped fins., lethargy, bulging eyes, white or gold flecks, sticky fins, dashing, white strings hangin from his fins, gre/white patches on him), he’s likely just a picky eater.
You’ve been overfeeding him a bit in the last days or so. A Betta’s stomach is only the size of it’s eye, so he should be fed 2-3 pieces of food, 1x/day, and fasted (not fed) 1 day/wk. Overfeeding can cause digestive issues, and like people, too much food isn’t healthy either.
When feeding bettas new food, them not liking it immediately and spitting it out isn’t uncommon. Sometimes they do it to crunch it down to a size they can eat more easily, sometimes they don’t don’t like the taste and sometimes they just play with it. Other times, they don’t recognize that its food if it’s different than what they were fed before. It sometimes helps to get them interested in it first. I’ve had luck using a toothpick to “play” with the food: drag with across the top of the water, waterlog it so it sinks, etc. Usually that gets their attention and they’ll try a piece. Sometimes they won’t do it while you’re there, but because you’ve piqued their interest, when you’re gone they’ll eat it.
If you can get it, live food is best. It’s close to what they would eat in the wild and they often like to “hunt” it. Frozen food is the 2nd best choice. PetSmart and Petco both carry it: brine shrimp, bloodworms, glassworms, etc. It’s around $4-5/bubble pack of food. Flakes, pellets, and freeze dried food have lots of filler that goes right through them because they can’t digest it and are also the least nutritious. In order of best-to-worst, it’s live, frozen, freeze-dried, flakes, pellets, with Hikari pellets having the best pellets. If you have to feed pellets make sure you soak them before feeding them to him because otherwise they’ll expand in his stomach and can cause digestive/bloating issues.
Also, make sure his temp. is a steady 78 degrees (since he’s a tropical fish, lower temps. cause illness, loss of appetite, digestive issues) and you keep up on his water changes, as dirty water can cause illness (and loss of appetite as a synmptom of illness).
