Betta Fish Care please answer?

Last night I got a Betta Fish and he seems to be doing fine but I am wondering if I am doing everything okay. He lives in a 3 gallon tank with neon rocks on the bottom and two castles in the corners that he goes into (they have holes in them for fish and he swims in and out and stayed in the back of one last night and came out when I fed him, as I type this he is swimming around), and I don’t have a heater but the water is 75 degrees F and I plan on cleaning the tank/rocks/castles twice a week, I use tap water conditioner by the way. The food says to feed him 2 – 4 pellets twice a day so I fed him 4 in the morning and 2 at night to be even. Am I doing everything okay? Should I change anything or purchase new stuff?

I got my betta 2 nights ago! Your doing great. Also don’t feed him freeze dried worms yet, because once he eats those, he won’t want the pellets any more, so feed him pellets for a long time, “raise him” on the pellets, then you can give the worms as a treat.
Does your tank have a filter? If so, buy a small gravel vacuum and remove half of the water every week, that’s what I’m going to do because my mom would kill me if the tank went dirty! Just clean everything once a week and your tank will be okay, but clean thoroughly.
You have a good feeding routine, just make sure he eats it all, and maybe cut it down to 4 or 5 pellets.
Also, for now what you have is good, and a lot of people are going to tell you that you need a five gallon tank filtered and heated. But that can wait for a few months. Get it when you are ready.

Good Luck and happy Betta- ing

How to care for Cold water fish?

Hi I was looking to get some fish I’ve been to some websites and decided to get a nice fish tank I want to get cold water fish but are the only cold water fish gold fishes and If there are any other breeds and what do I need and are betta fish cold water fish

Thx

Bettas are tropical, but they can live in the smallest tank such as a ten gallon tank whereas goldfish need a seriously big tank in comparison – at least 20-30 gallons per fancy goldfish which means a very expensive tank, not to mention common goldfish which grow so big they eventually need to be put in a pond! A Betta fish and a few compatible schooling fish – never more than one Betta in the same tank, especially a small tank! with a heater would be a very easily maintained tank. Bettas are far more beginner fish than Goldfish, contrary to popular belief, as they can survive in less water and smaller tanks. You could also keep one Dwarf Puffer in a smaller tank by itself although this would be more difficult and would take some research.

Another option would be guppies which also require a heater but you could keep quite a few of them and they come in some amazing colours. Though don’t ever put Bettas and Guppies together! Honestly, a tropical tank may sound like a lot of work but just google it and you’ll see how much easier keeping a Betta in a small tank is in comparison to trying to keep fancy goldfish! Then again, if you’re willing to spend the money, by all means buy a bigger expensive tank with a very good filter and get goldfish. If so, I’d recommend Orandas.

Cheaper and far, far easier, only requiring a one-time heater purchase?

- Betta fish, with appropriate schooling fish, or by itself

- A Dwarf Puffer, by itself.

More expensive but fulfilling your want for Goldfish?

- An Oranda in a 20-30 gallon tank. If you want any more Goldfish, then you will need ten extra gallons per extra goldfish. And you will need a very very good filter as they are very messy.

Cheaper and easier?

My betta fish died!!! attacked itself?

so i have a 10 gallon tank with a male betta, a suckerfish, a rosy red, and some type of yellow coldwater fish that i dont know the name of. i found my betta today with almost all of its tail and fins ripped off. i have seen it try to attack its reflection in the glass a few times, so is it possible he attacked himself?? thanx
the reason i dont know what type of fish it is…

for ecology at school we had to bring in fish to put in a tank to study nitrogen cycle. i brought in 3 rosy reds, and my friends brought in those 3 random fish (both bought from pet store). so at the end, it was between putting them in some tank at school with a lot of other fish, probably too small of a tank, or bring the only 2 fish that didnt die.

and i dont mean cold water i mean room temp if thats confusing people.

Betas have been known to bite their own tails..but not the top fin. Is the rosy red a barb? if so, i would put my money on that one. the coldwater fish should not be in the fix. what you have seen is his reaction to seeing his reflection…perfectly normal for a male betta. Tail biting can be caused by extreme stress. But from you describe, it sounds like he was attacked, not self inflicted. next time, i would advise you to research any and all fish before placing them together. it saves you from problems like this.
