Betta Fish Health Care What fish can I have with my Pleco and Chinese Algae Eater?
I have a 30 Gallon fish tank, and for a long time now (at least 2 years) there have only been 2 fish in it. My Chinese Algae Eater (which is really old, about 12 years old,) and my Pleco (who is about 5.) It used to be my brothers fish tank, and he never really cared about it much, then I inherited it when we switched rooms, and didn’t want to move the tank. Now, I really love these fish, and I have nursed them back to health time and time again, but I feel like they are lonely. I don’t want to put any fish in that will hurt them, or any fish they will hurt. And I have heard that Chinese Algae Eaters get very aggressive as they age. Also he’s pretty big (about 6 or 7 inches). I have a betta in another tank by himself, would he be okay with them? Need some suggestions please.
Something like a small school of tiger barbs should suit.
They are active swimming around the tank, but wont worry your larger bottom dwellers, and are quick enough to keep out of the CAEs way.
A medium size gourami (pearl etc) would be OK, they swim around the top of the tank so wont really interact with the bottom dwellers.
Betta Fish Sick What do you do with a sick Betta fish?
My Betta Fish hasn’t been eating and hardly moving around its bowl. I’ve tried to research it with no success. I’ve also had it for about 2 years, so is it just old, or is it sick??
it’s in a bowl. it’s cold, cramped, and dirty. you wouldn’t be too lively if someone kept you in a closet at about 45F (bettas are tropical fish and need temps around 75-85F while room temp water in an average house is about 65F, 20colder than they need) with no place to go to the bathroom but the floor? even if someone cleaned the closet of your waste the recommended 3 times a week you’re still not going to be very healthy. bettas need filters and heaters to be healthy and happy.
their natural habitat is not a “puddle” or a muddy footprint. they live in rice paddies, and while they may not be very DEEP they are very wide, calling them puddles is quite a stretch. it’s more like a shallow pond. bettas each have their own large territory. keeping them in a bowl not only doesn’t make sense because they don’t really live in small puddles but also because the dimensions are flipped.
try getting him a 5-10gallon tank with a filter and heater and a few live or silk plants. he’ll perk up pretty quick, 2 is the average life of a bowl betta, however one kept in a tank can live for 10years. put stones from his existing bowl in the tank, add stress coat and beneficial bacteria (both come bottled at the pet store) and run the filter until the temp is a steady temp of about 78F. then put your betta in a baggy with the water he is in and float the bag in the tank for about an hour to make the water temp he’s in slowly adjust to the tank temp. once they’re equal dump him in the tank.
