I’m converting my 55g FW into SW aquarium only fish at first and planning to add corals in the future can I go without a skimmer for a while at least until I add corals will this have any affects on the fish. I’m currently running a fluval 405 filter any other filtration you guys recommend for saltwater tank thank you
A skimmer is more valuable for any tank with even a single fish as they are the main bioload on the tank (make the most waste). They are considered necessary for tanks with fish and coral since it handles the fish waste rather well, improving water quality for the coral, but really it is the fish causing the desire for the skimmer, not the coral. A reef tank with no fish does very well without a skimmer, but a reef tank with fish does not do so well without one, necessitating more frequent water changes. A fish only tank sees the most benefit as people tend to overstock fish and have all sorts of problems with water quality without one. A skimmer is removing waste and proteins from the system before they add to the ammonia or nitrate!
The fluval is certainly not enough on its own. You will need additional water flow and ideally live rock. Get at least 750 more gallons per hour of water movement in there! koralia are some nice but reasonably prices powerheads that are great in saltwater tanks.
The best type of filtration is a refugium. CPR and Octopus make some nice hang on back refugiums, some models with built in skimmers. They help reduce nitrate through skimming and biological processes, keeping water quality up and stable!
Fluval 405 Canister Why Is It Cruel to Keep a Goldfish in a Bowl?
Just a random thought while I was running at the gym. I don’t keep my goldfish in bowls. They are in a 50 gallon with a Fluval 405 canister filter and a 30 gallon with a AquaClear filter. But I have wondered this for a little while, why does everyone say it is cruel to keep goldfish in a bowl? For hundreds of years they were kept in bowls in China and Japan while they were being developed into the fish they are today without filters and water treatments (example of bowls here: http://www.exoticgoldfish.net/setup.html ). I’m just so curious because whenever someone posts about a goldfish in a bowl it’s like people upset over it. Is it because we have modern technology and should be using it? Or is it for other reasons?
In China they use giant pots not bowls it only in the movies. Cruel since there is no space to swim around and no filter water quality deteriorate in one day in a bowl. And in China very huge land most people in Ancient time got fish pond or giant clay pots not tiny bowls like in the movies. Keeping goldifsh in a bowl is very profitable since buyer keep on buying new fish for their kids.
Fluval Fx5 Canister Filter Is a Hagen FLUVAL FX5 Canister Filter suitable for a 80 gallon saltwater FOWLR?
I have a 80 gallon saltwater aquarium, I have a yellow head eel, and a damselfish. I want pufferfish and lionfish but cant because it says they require protein skimmers. My stand doesn’t have room underneath for a sump refugium, so I can only have canister filters behind, and want the best for my tank. Is a Hagen FLUVAL FX5 Canister Fish Aquarium Filter good, or is it to much?
Thanks
I use a canister in my 75 gallon as well. It has always turned my water over enough times an hour to sustain my tank. Just watch them though, you have to clean them constantly. They get murky real fast and can raise your nitrates. I would clean them every two to three weeks when you have to change out the carbon. Good luck:)
