My fluval 405 stopped working!!?

I just cleaned the filter last week.. everything was running fine.. a couple bubbles from the bubble curtian we getting sucked up and ive had that problem before but i fixed it and i fixed it today. . today i left the house.. for maybe two hours.. came back and the filter had stopped working.. i disconnected it.. took the white spinny thing out and it was steaming.. the top of the filter was warm as well and it usually isnt.. I have two oscar fish!! i need to fix the filter! HELP!
I did!! ive cleaned it many times ive had it for two years.. i over flow it so wheni i put the top back on water comes out.. and then i prime it before i start it up. .

your filter wasnt full when you started it back up today and it burned up the return motor common problem i hope it was still under warranty.

every time you disassemble one of those filters make sure its completely full by using the primer pump on the filter.

I wish i could give ya good news but your gonna have to get that motor replaced or get a whole new filter.

Why Is It Cruel to Keep a Goldfish in a Bowl?

Just a random thought while I was running at the gym. I don’t keep my goldfish in bowls. They are in a 50 gallon with a Fluval 405 canister filter and a 30 gallon with a AquaClear filter. But I have wondered this for a little while, why does everyone say it is cruel to keep goldfish in a bowl? For hundreds of years they were kept in bowls in China and Japan while they were being developed into the fish they are today without filters and water treatments (example of bowls here: http://www.exoticgoldfish.net/setup.html ). I’m just so curious because whenever someone posts about a goldfish in a bowl it’s like people upset over it. Is it because we have modern technology and should be using it? Or is it for other reasons?

In China they use giant pots not bowls it only in the movies. Cruel since there is no space to swim around and no filter water quality deteriorate in one day in a bowl. And in China very huge land most people in Ancient time got fish pond or giant clay pots not tiny bowls like in the movies. Keeping goldifsh in a bowl is very profitable since buyer keep on buying new fish for their kids.

Questions about undergravel filter?

I’m setting up a new tank and still have time to change my filter design. I’ve built a homemade UGF(a grid looking thing made from pvc with holes drilled). The plan is to power the UGF with a canister filter. In my mind this is why I should do it this way.

1. constant downward flow bringing waste to the bottom

2. PVC design should spread flow over the entire bottom of tank

3. canister filter should suck up waste then actually filter it

My questions are: In theory this seems to be a great design, why hasn’t anyone done it this way(no one has written good or bad things)

What are some cons to this system? Drawbacks when compared to canister filter set up regular, or UGF set up regular or combination of both. Go ahead and be as critical as you want!

To give you an idea of what I have, It is a 50 gallon freshwater tank. I have already bought a Fluval 405. I plan to use a very coarse gravel(larger stones) to allow unrestricted flow of water and waste.

i’ve done this, and it’s not as easy as it sounds.

there are several things you have to think about, the path of least resistance being the main one. the main flow of water is going to come from the tube that the 405 is attached to, and also where the least amount of gravel is.

for the UGF to work properly you need to have the gravel sloping with it being highest at the UGF intake.

also, the UGF can get clogged due to the holes being too small and waste getting stuck in it.

if you decide to plant the tank stem plants will root themselves to the UGF making it harder to clean as well
