Betta Fish Life Expectancy how do i properly take care of a betta fish?
i have 2 betta fish. I feed them 2 freeze dried blood worms in the morning and 2 at night. i skip one day of the week to not feed them(today) and the following day i usually give them a piece of raw meat, and nothing else. They both hate pellets! i went threw 9 brands of pellets and they hate them all. I waited for about 4 days without them eating and they still didn’t eat the pellets so i gave them blood worms instead. I clean out the bowls about once every 2-3 weeks(not too often because it disturbs the water) they get filtered water plus water conditioner too be on the safe side) My first one has been with me for about 2 months and my new one i got about a week and a half ago. they love me! am i a good or bad owner? is this good feeding? tell me ANY OTHER CARE ON BETTA FISH! i want these 2 fish too live for about 3-4 years(there life expectancy )
Bettas and no other fish for the matter belong in a bowl.
Each betta needs at very least 5 gallons of space (divided in half 10 gal would probably be the best bet here). They also need heated water as they are tropical fish originating from thailand.
Filtration is necessary to turn toxic fish waste (ammonia) into relatively harmless nitrate by bacteria (ammonia is toxic even at levels as low as .4 ppm, nitrate is 30,000 less toxic than ammonia). Establishing those bacterial colonies is called cycling.
While cycling with fish is NOT recommended, in your case it would be the best way to go. A sterile tank is still better than two bowls.
I have had my precious betta almost a year now. He is in a 1 gallon tank and is normally very happy until recently. About 2 weeks ago, I noticed he couldn’t eat. He acted like he wanted to and would attack his food (freeze dried bloodworms) but unfortunately couldn’t get it in his mouth. I then switched his food to flakes and would use a toothpick to guide it toward him. This worked for awhile until this week. He still shows sign of wanting to eat but ignores the food as it falls beside him. He is also very lethargic and when he does “swim” he struggles and has a hard time moving. I have also noticed he might have some fin rot. His dorsal fin is turning black and transparent. Also, when he is resting on the bottom of the tank the back half of him seems to float upward while his head is still toward the bottom.
I really hope i can help him in anyway! Thanks for any suggestions!!
hey I have a betta too and dealt with stuff like that…
its ideal to have a 5 gallon tank, heated and filtered, but most people dont, I’d strongly advise you to, but until then, or incase you dont, I’d still suggest buying a heater
his tank should be around 78, right now I would suggest a 50% water change, and add some aquarium salt. I would actually have the heat turned to around 82 while he’s healing, it seems to help them.
He may have a swim bladder issue… for now, go maybe 2 days without feeding, afterwards boil a single pea, take off the shell and cut/crush it into bite sized pieces for him. then drop one piece at a time… its even better to smush it on your finger so he can eat it off there as peas sink and he may have trouble catching it. put a fake plant in your tank, nothing with sharp edges, so he has something to rest on
Look at his eyes, maybe they’re clouding over, he coulld be going blind…
my betta is currently 5, blind, and often lies down… but he’s happy and healthy, other than his age and what that comes with. anyways mine almost died so many times until I finally learned proper care, and I think the money is totally worth spending, even if he is “just a fish”… theres actually a lot of options for betta owners. mine currently lives in a 20 gallon community tank with neon tetras, a khuli loach, and some platies

Blue Betta My Blue betta fish has a big stomach, is that normal? If not what can I do about it to help? is it a tumor?
I have a blue betta, I’ve had it for a while and he gets swim bladder sometimes, but lately he’s been fine. His stomach is really big, and has been for the last few weeks. Is he getting fat? or is it a tumor? Is there anything I can do? I’m feeding him Hikari betta bio-gold, since the flakes always seemed to give him swim bladder.
First you need to make sure you have a male betta and not a gravid femqale. Then once you have confirmed that your betta is a male, observe the scales, do they look like they are protrudung from the body versus lying flush against it? If so, yor betta may have dropsy. does the fishes body look like a pinecone when you look at it from the top?
