Discus Fish Tank Mates What type of fish should I put in my new 29 gallon?
I want larger fish that live a long time, and have a lot of personality. I know that I don’t want to do goldfish. I considered keeping a discus but I think the tank is really too small and they’re a bit more advanced for me. Any good ideas of fish? Should I go with Angels? And if so, what are good tank mates?

I’d get the rasboras, and cories earlier on and add the angels once the tank is a bit more established.

Discus Fish Tank Questions about Discus Fish Tank: Should I add blackwater extract and bubble stone ?
Blackwater extract is absolutely unnecessary, especially if your fish are tank raised. Really, blackwater extract is just tannic and humic acid, which are both found in peat, and tannic acid is found in driftwood. Using peat would be far cheaper and just as effective, but again, unnecessary. Unless your pH is around 8.0, you really have no need to worry assuming your fish are tank raised.
If your tank is heavily planted and you inject CO2, the last thing you want to do is add an air stone. The surface agitation it creates will accelerate the gas exchange, allowing oxygen from the air (which is in a lower concentration in the aquarium) into the water, and letting CO2 (which is in a higher concentration in the aquarium) into the air. Also, the constant blub, blub, blub noise will likely stress the Discus.

Discus Fish Can a discus fish be kept with a spotted puffer fish?
The tank is 95 gal. slightly brackish. The puffer is already living well with varies other fish, but has attacked other fish and snails. These fish had to be saved immediately. Discus fish are beautiful and I would love to add one to my tank.
Nope. That would actually be a very bad idea for several reasons. Not only are they completely incompatible tankmates, but discus need very clean, pure water without any salt. They can’t live in a brackish tank. GSPs are (as I think you know) aggressive little snots that will rip fins and chunks from tankmates that aren’t puffers, and they won’t hold back simply because their tank mate happens to be particularly beautiful and expensive.
Discus should be kept in groups of about five or six to prevent bullying, or in breeding pairs. You can keep them with peaceful dwarf cichlids like Bolivians or German blues and with shoals of tetra (like Cardinals) as dither fish. Rainbowfish also apparently make good tankmates. The puffer would be a definite no though. A 95 gallon would be a great discus tank, but since they’re so particular (no carbon filters either) you pretty much have to set up and plan the tank specifically for and catered to the discus, not add one to an existing tank and hope it adapts.
