Discus Fish Stress
Another Question?

is it really true that adding a little salt in a freshwater aquarium help the fish? I read the back of the product and it said something to do with electrolytes and how freshwater fish doesnt have enough of them, but i hear salt will stress the discus. Which one should i listen to :-/?

It’s always good to get several points of views on a subject like this. I do not agree with the point of view that long term salt usage is bad. I don’t dispute the kidney claims either as I haven’t read anything one way or another on that. I am curious to know though, if those findings have determined if the fish keepers were using PROPER salt dosages, as well as measuring the electrolytes in those tanks too.

So I’m going to give you a couple articles that talk about REDOX and electrolyte balance in aquariums, the roles it plays, and the benefits to keeping things balanced. This is from Everything Aquatic, and yes it is a site I help manage, but Carl S has a quarter century in the aquarium hobbies and has vast amounts of knowledge I don’t have. I have learned alot from this man and I think these articles will help you understand the uses of salts and electrolytes.

All said though, yes, Aquarium Salt, not table salt, is a good thing to use, and at least one thing it does help, is gill function with oxygen absorbtion. Read these articles over for more on that subject please. Here’s an additional post on Osmotic functions in fish too.
