Online Betta Fish Supplies
What supplies do I need to have for a Betta fish (male)?

I want a male betta and I want him to have an almost perfect home and good food so he can live a happy life. I’m not an expert on bettas so I need help on what type of tank, lighting, food ,decorations and stuff like that to get for him. And also I have tried reading online about this water stuff with the ph levels and the temperature and putting a teaspoon of aquarium salt in the water and etc… But It confuses me lol… Lots of help appreciated!!

-5 gallons tank minimum
-Filter
-50 watt heater
-Blood worms
-Pellets
-Liquid testing kit

-The 5 gallon filter and heater is minimum for 1 Betta fish. You can have a few ghost shrimp in there.
-Filter is 100% needed. You also much cycle it. If you do not, the fish will die of ammonia poising. You need a liquid testing kit. I use API freshwater master kit. Strip kits do not work.
-Heater is a must. 50 watts fits a 5 gallon best. It needs to be heated to 80*F. Perfect temp.
-They need some type of worm or shrimp in their diet. In the wild they eat bugs/larva off of the top of the water.
-Pellets give them their nutrients. This should be their main food.
-Liquid testing kit is for testing levels during cycling, and weekly after that.

Feeding should be done like this:
Pellets 3 times a week
Worms 2 times a week
Boiled and shelled peas once a week
Nothing once a week

The peas help with digestion, it clears everything out of his system. They need to be fasted once week to also help with the digestion also. Feed the peas the day before you fast him.
Get the worms from petsmart, they are frozen in little cubes. All you do is shave a little bit off, take a cup of tank water, and let it sit for 1 minuet. Then you can feed him.
They do not need to much food. Only 2 or 3 of what you are feeding twice a day. Their stomachs are as big as there eye.

Salt is not needed unless he has ich (White spots), then you do 1 tsp per 5 gallons.

Lighting is just a normal hood with a light in it. Make sure he can see and that is it unless you want live plants.

Decorations, I would get a floating Betta log. My Male LOVES it to pieces. Also some fake plants are good. Make sure they are not hard plastic, that will tear his fins. Silk fake plants are the best.

Good luck

Can i use a product called Cycle in my betta’s 1g fish bowl?

i saw it at the store a few days ago and i was wondering if i could use it in a 1 gallon fish bowl for my betta (no filter). I think it’s to treat the water in aquariums, but said it is safe to use and impossible to overdose.

heres the link: http://www.hagen.com/usa/aquatic/product.cfm?CAT=1&SUBCAT=121&PROD_ID=01076000020101

any comments?

you can but you are wasting your money. it is to help tanks establish bacteria colonies. you can’t do that in a bowl. if you want to add something just because try some aquarium salt — about 1/2 a teaspoon or some melafix — i do melafix at 1/2 strength with my bettas — its the same as stuff called bettafix that costs a lot more .

Betta Fish Online Store

What’s wrong with my betta fish?

I got a betta fish last night and put it in one of the betta set ups they sold at the pet store. I can’t remember if he looked like this yesterday, but today he looks very red around the gills. I have a test kit that checks ph, water hardness, nitrate levels, nitrite levels, and alkalinity. I tested the water and everything looks fine, but the water is hard. I read online that the redness might be from ammonia, so I’m gonna get a test kit for that. It’s been less than 24 hours, does ammonia cause symptoms that quickly? I’m also going to buy some betta water, because it’s probably better than mine, although mine is treated. Are there any other things that could be causing the redness around his gills? I’m really worried, so please help me out!

Ammonia usually doesn’t cause problems so quickly, BUT he might have already have had ammonia burn before you got him. I would still buy those tests for the ammonia and monitor it closely so he can heal. What is the water capacity of your betta set-up?
