Fluval 305 Canister Filter how many fish can i add to my tank at one time?
i have a 46 gallon freshwater tank with 5 small cichlids. its running a oversized fluval 305 canister filter and i was wondering if i can add a small eclipse catfish and 3 small clown loaches at once. thanks. Also give me ideas of other cool fish i could add.
Clown loaches are extremely social animals, they need to be in groups of 6 or more and they grow to a foot long each. consider a smaller species like yoyo loaches, polka dot loaches, zebra loaches, or banded loaches, and get then in groups no less than 4
Eclipse catfish are often advertised as growing to only 6 inches, But they can grow to 18 and thats is way too big for your tank unfourtunatly.
I would only ad one group of fish at once, if you wanted to add 4 smaller loaches, Its probly an ok risk, but if your getting 2 different species anyway, It is not worth the risk to add so much at once.
I drained my aquarium last week to clean it out in preparation for moving my family. I looked to drain the filtering system but neglected to separate the motor from the filter housing. After getting the aquarium to the new location and filling it with water, I then went through the process of priming the filter pump and then plugged it in. I got nothing but a grinding noise. The Oscars that I have had for three years are now dead and the Plecostomus that was with our family for ten years also died. I feel horrible. I need to get this pump running again before the water in the tank becomes stagnant. I’ve tried to go online to find out ways to repair this equipment but can come up with nothing but sales of more filters. Please throw me a bone I can use. Thanks YA team!
Assuming you reassembled it correctly, most likely the reason it made a loud noise was that it just needed more priming. Did you fill the filter case with water first? When the filter system has been drained completely, the hoses will be empty (or rather, full of air), and they need to be purged of air and filled with water before they will siphon correctly. Mainly, you do this by pumping that little primer pump (after you’ve filled the main body with aquarium water).
Since it ran dry, it’s possible that the impeller (the little propeller-looking thing in the motor) is damaged. This part is easy to replace. Some pet stores sell the replacement impeller, but if you can’t find it you can order it online from Hagen (the maker of Fluval filters).
Fluval 305 Canister 40 Gallon Planted Tank Stocking Question?
I’m working out a plan for stocking my 40 gallon. I have a fluval 305 canister filter and change the water twice weekly. I would like to get the following:
Two Bristlenose Catfish
A Small School of Cardinals
Two or Three Angels
Four to Five Hatchet Fish (They do best in a group.)
What do you think? I think it might be a little overstocked… Should I do without something? Too many angels? Hatchets?
Unless a “small school of cardinals” constitutes about 20, you are just fine, especially with the bi-weekly water changes. Its nice to see a moderate stocklist for a change, most of the people here come asking about the 10 pacus they’ve bought for their fishbowl…
