My Betta’s Fins Are Clamped, Why And What Can I do?

My boyfriend gave me his betta fish named Gary and Gary’s fins are clamped and i’ve noticed dots on his body my boyfriend said hes been like that for months but was perfectly healthy when he got him, i don’t know what to do i’ve cleaned his tank really well with just hot water and he also won’t eat.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Your betta is definitely sick. If his fins are clamped it is probably fin rot and if you see a spot on him this is probably ick. If you go to any pet store or wal mart you can find medicine to treat these illnesses but act fast because the longer you betta is sick the closer he will get to dying. Just follow the directions on the bottles and let him sit in the medicated water for about four days. After four days change his water and put him in the fresh water. If he is still sick looking treat the water with the medicine again. Repeat this until he starts acting and looking healthy again.

There are a few ways to make sure your betta is healthy:

Do you have him in a gallon tank or larger? In a tiny bowl he will get sick off of his own amonia all the time. If you have him in a tiny bowl please consider paying 10-15 bucks for a gallon aquarium. He will be so much happier and healthier

Do you have a filter? Betta fish prefer still water so if you filter your water take it out.

Do you change his water once a week? Make sure it is the same temperature as the water you took him out of (a thermometer in the tank will help you with this.

Are you overfeeding? Bettas only need 5 to 7 pellets per feeding time (twice a day). Overfeeding them will make the water dirty and cause them to poop more making the water a breeding haven for bacteria.

I hope all these tips will help you out. I’ve had bettas for the past 3 years and am a hobbiest breeder so let me know if you have any questions.
