Yellow aquarium water and dead fish?

Last week we lost about 6 fish in that tank, all cichlids, the water was yellow, we normally due a water change every couple of weeks because the tank is so big and take about 25% out at a time. Also with the yellow water, a foam has formed on top of the water.

The tank is 5ft by 2ft by 2ft and about 450litres and we have a fluval FX5 filter on it.
Thanks for your answers so far, i was thinking that it could have been ammonia but wasn’t sure.

The tank has been set up for about 2-3 years, and the last fish i added was a couple of months back.

No no filters or equipment.

I do feed prawns to the fish about once a week, but all are eaten but would this cause the rise in ammonia?

That is an indication of high ammonia levels. I assume the water has a faint odor as well.

Is this a new tank? It is strange to have that much ammonia on older more established tank. Since you reference you do a water change every few weeks, it sounds like maybe the tank has been set up for an extended period. So if an older tank, did you add a bunch of fish recently, replace the gravel or filter, or any other drastic change to the system?

To temporarily fix, do a water change immediately. Then investigate what caused the issue to take steps to fix for the long run.

Fluval Filter Media
Filter media for terapin/turtles?

I have a large exterior canister filter, which is of course sold to be used with fish.
I wondered if I could use different media to better effect seeing as;
I clean the filter out and do full water change every week,
don’t really have time or space be able to wash filter media in same temperature water(killing the good bacteria, so I understand)
turtle poo from older turtles doesn’t seem to break down very easily (think its that plants and prawns in their diet)

At the mo’ I have:
50% sponge
40% ceramic doughnut things
10% carbon

Is there any point to the doughnuts if most of the waste removal seams to be physical rather than biological?

What benefit does the carbon have, how often should I change it (don’t like to ,its expensive!)?

Should I get more sponge?

Would a fluval ‘polish’ sponge prevent of the discolouration of water that sometimes occours at the end of each week, have you ever used one?

Do you think I should work harder to cultivate the bacteria?

Yes youll need more sponge, and yes for the bacteria too, ull want ur turtles to be healthy
