Normal Betta Fish Behavior

Is my Betta fish sick?

I have my male Betta in a 20 gallon tank with 7 tetras, 5 white cloud minnows, 2 corry cat fish and 1 African dwarf frog. My Betta lays at the bottom of the take a lot, and really only comes up for air and to eat. He always eats when its feeding time, then swims for a few minutes and just go back down to the bottom of the tank and sits there, is this normal behavior?

I know this might sound odd, but your fish might be depressed. He has such a large tank all to himself and doesn’t know what to do with his time. My advice would be to get a female (if he is a male) beta fish, or vise versa. But before you empty the new fish into the tank, be SURE to rearrange the decorations (pirate ships, plants, bubbles, etc.) to make a new surrounding for the two fish. Even if you use the same decorations, the space will be new to the old fish, and obviously new to the new fish. If you don’t do this, then the old fish will become territorial and … kill the newer fish. Trust me, I used to have these types of fish, and this exact scenario has happened to me. I’m just looking out for you… and your fish!
But I’d advise not to get a new fish if your beta starts swimming upsidedown…. I mean then we might have some problems.

Hope I was of some minor help!
