Fluval Underwater Filter

why does my betta fish hide under filter all day?

he hides under my fluval underwater filter all day. my tanks 30 gallon so i think its enough room for him.
my tank also has 2 corys 4 glofish and its moderatly planted with live plants. could it be something in my tank or just because i got him a couple of days ago and he just needs to get use to it?
ya it has a current control on my filter but i turned it down really low. i might turn it off for a a bit to see if that might be it.
ya i plan on getting more just want my fish to have a lot of room. i have one ghost shrimp to ( cool little guy)
here is my tank you can see him hiding on the right. http://imageshack.us/g/850/img4161v.jpg/
ive never owned a betta so any suggestions on what i could change in my tank are appreciated.
and the guy who asked where i got him from-petco and right now i am feeding him some tropical flakes until can head to the store and get him some betta food.

This is alot for a Betta to have to get used to all at once, cohabitating with other fish, large tank, new sights, sounds, smells. A filter for a 30 gal is very strong and it may be the only place he can be still and not have to fight the current.

I brought up tucking himself under the filter because that may be the only place he can stay still but since yours is on low I’m thinking he’s overwhelmed or intimidated, especially since it’s during the day and not just at night to sleep.
Something I started doing with all my Betta’s both m/f before releasing them into the community tanks is I use a 3 way breeder box I got at Petco, it is a clear plastic. I took all the innards out making it about the size of 4 of the cups they came in. It suctions up to the wall of the tank and doesn’t move around. I leave them in that for a few days before releasing them. Lets them acclimate to all the newness in their own time. It’s an option. Yes, ghosties are cool.

Great news he’s eating!
Watch his gills. If they are pumping hard all the time he is stressed. When a Betta is under prolonged stress like day after day without being able to calm down they tend to get sick easily.
Maybe more plants would help him be more comfortable to be out in the tank. Some Betta’s like to tuck into little caves or huts. They like the Betta hammock. On any accessories for him just make sure they aren’t sharp anywhere. That can rip his fins.
Consider the breeder box. Make sure it’s a clear plastic one. He needs to beable to see the tank. He will protest in it at first. That’s ok. It’s for his benefit. http://www.petco.com/product/7449/Lees-Multi-Purpose-3-Way-Breeders.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearch Take off the lid and take out all the innards.
Hopefully this can get worked out. If not it may be like Betta Fish said he may need his own tank.
