Fish Tank to Terrapin Tank?
Hi, i have two fish tanks and due to fish deaths, of old age, i can now fit all of my fish in one tank. This would leave an AR620 Fish Tank by Aqua One free. I was wondering about converting it into a Terrapin Tank. I need to know…
How to do it
How much it is likely to cost
What kinds of Terrapins are easiest to keep
Any general advice
Thanks
P.S I have an internal filter (Fluval 3 Plus), and an internal heater (came with tank) and was wondering if they could be used. Also what other creatures I could keep.
this tank is 90 liters, correct? if so then it is about 24 us gallons. Not enough to keep any turtle for long. Any kind of turtle that you get will outgrow this tank and need a bigger one. Small mud and musk turtles will need a minimum of 55 gallons as adults, and those are pretty much the smalles turtles that you can get. So basically if you were to get turtles then ultimately you would need to buy a whole new setup 55 gallons or larger depending on what kind of turtle you choose. If you want a red-eared slider, think 75 to 125 gallons for an adult sized. You will also need a filter that is rated for about twice the actual tank volume as turtles are very messy creatures and require much more filtration than fish. Probably a canister filter. That is what’s usually recommended for turtles. Also you will have to provide a basking spot of some sort along with a full spectrum uva and uvb light, and a different light that will provide heat for basking. The full spectrum uv lights are from 20 to 40$ USD and have to be replaced every 6 months. Oh yeah and there is special stuff you need to treat the water with for turtles but this stuff is not expensive. maybe like $7 for a bottle of repti safe and about 2 bucks for a turtle sulfur block to dissolve in the water. I also recommend a Python no spill clean and fill, because in my experience if you don’t have one then cleaning your tank is going to be aggravating and probably difficult to talk yourself into doing on a regular basis. These are about $50 USD. But a good investment in my opinion for someone who has a large tank. Which you will if you have turtles.
Well plus the fact that you should have enough cash on hand at any given time to take your pet to the vet if it gets sick. Turtles live a long time and they are life companions, not just some cheap pets.
A lot of people get them having no idea the level of care that they will need, but trust me as far as time and expense goes, I would put them equivalent to a dog or cat.
