Discus Fish Ph
Discus Fish Ph
Discus Fish acting shy – Possible ph issue? Could Mopani wood cause this?

Hello All,
I had 5 happy Discus fish. I got a large piece of Mopani wood and soaked it in water for a few days. I added it my tank and added my carbon back in to help with the stuff coming off of the wood to change the water color. The tank got a bit yellow in color but the fish were happy. Now I just removed the carbon and fish are hiding. I tested my water Ammonia 0.10- Nitrate 5.0 – Nitrite 0 – PH 7.8 – The PH is normally around 7.6. Should I take the wood out or just keep changing the water each day and add the carbon back in? I had to use carbon too often as I have heard it is not too good for Discus. Help! Thank You

i wouldn’t keep doing water changes. because you have some ammonia reading, and some nitrate, but not nitrite readings it means that your tank is not fully cycled. This can stress discus out.

Carbon really doesn’t do much. Don’t worry about the tannin, this happens and it is not harmful to your fish. If you have problems with massive amount of tannin, remove the wood and pour boiling water over it, this really helps to remove the color of the water. however, that is just for your viewing pleasure, tannin has no known bad effects, and it is perfectly healthy for your fish.

i would remove the carbon, and watch the nitrate cycle. Begin dong water changes AFTER you are getting no ammonia readings, little nitrite readings, and mostly nitrate. This is most likely the issue with your fish.
!! good luck !!
