Discus Fish Growth
Discus Fish Growth
Can discus fish be kept in a tank with flourite, ADA soil or Eco-Complete as the substrate?
In many sites, it says discus fish cannot live in water with high minerals.
Don’t Ada soil, eco-complete or flourite provide a rich substrate full of minerals for plant growth acceleration?
Yet I see many tanks on different sites with these rich substrate???
When it is suggested to avoid water with a high mineral content for Discus, this generally applies to minerals like calcium and magnesium (bi)carbonate, sodium, potassium, and other minerals that constitute hard water (affecting KH and GH) and buffer the pH upwards. Substrates like ADA Soil, EcoComplete, and Flourite contain minerals that are plant nutrients, and are very low in the above mentioned minerals, but high in other, inert minerals that won’t affect the water. Furthermore, the point of a fertilized substrate is that the nutrients are locked in the particles, and cannot easily be released into the water (where they would quickly lead to algae blooms).
