Clear to milky white film on betta fish water?
I have had betta fishes for a long time and I have never seen this before. He has a 2.5gallon tank with live plants and a filter. I condition the water before I clean the tank and I clean it often.
I have read up on it and there seems to be lots of different explanations for it. Some say it is protein or bacteria but the stuff seriously shows up over night so I dont know how bacteria could just build up like that in such a short period of time with no warning. Others say it is saliva to help his bubbles keep from popping.
What exactly is it? Why does it show up so fast? Can it hurt my fish?
Its proteins, from rotting fish food. Decrease the amount your feeding and clean once a week. Mine does it too. You just need to take your net and skim the top every morning. It is worse in warm, and humid weather. I have 2 betta in old antique glass punch bowls for decoration. they have lived there for 2 years now and it happens alot. They havent died or gotten sick at all.
