Betta Fish Nesting
betta fish nests?

my male betta fish has been in close contact with my other female betta. shouldnt he start building the nest? how long will it take for him to get that he needs to make a nest? my female is soo ready..she has the dark horizontal lines and she is pretty much flirting with him through the glass. oh yeah and how clean does the aquarium need to be before i let the betta’s spawn? is there a way to clean the water out without ruining the bubble nest?? thank you =]]

Generally for breeding the water should ideally be 2-3 inches deep (water pressure deeper than 4 inches will kill the embryo), there is no way to clean the tank without disturbing the nest, he should have a nest built before you let the female in with him (assuming you have a glass divider between them). Him seeing the female and flaring (flirting) at her will stimulate the nesting. After they have mated, the female should be allowed to go back on her side of the divider and the male be left with the nest (otherwise he will kill her). The male raises the fry. There are some (difficult to find, but they are there) good books on Betta’s and their mating habits.
