Betta Fish Hiding Places
Betta Fish Hiding Places
New Betta fish question?

I bought a Betta fish three days ago and I’m nervous. For the first day I kept him in a 1/2 liter “Betta tank” but moved him into a 5 gallon with plenty of plants and hiding places yesterday. I acclimated him to the water and everything, and he was swimming around gleefully for the first several hours, but for the past ten or so (whenever I check on him) he’s been sitting in one spot or another. I fed him a bloodworm a few minutes ago and he got it in his mouth and then dove behind a plant to finish it. I think I woke him up or something! His fins have been a little more expanded since I moved him and I think he’s a little more colorful since I bought him, but is he okay?

Just getting used to his surroundings! I’m so glad you got him a proper-sized home. Does it have a hood, heater, and gentle filter? Those are necessary for his health and well-being.
Make sure you do a weekly partial (20%) water change with conditioned, room-temperature water. You should not remove the Betta while doing this. Netting is very stressful and can easily tear delicate fins. He will obligingly move out of your way.
Blood worms are an excellent supplement to his diet. Just limit them them to no more than a few times a week. The bulk of his diet should come from high-quality Betta pellets. They are properly balanced from a nutritional stand-point, to meet a Betta’s unique needs.
Make sure that one day a week you feed him nothing. That is necessary for his digestive health, and will prevent swim-bladder disorders.
You may already know all of this. If so, great! However, I feel it bears repeating, in case there was anything you were not yet aware of. Better safe than sorry!
Sounds like a happy little guy so far. Good luck!
