Betta Fish Fins
Betta Fish Fins

My betta fish’s fins are ripping/shredding, what’s wrong with him?
His fins look tattered. One fin looks like it’s holding on by a few small threads, and there are holes in them. What is causing this and what can I do to help stop it and help him heal up?
I haven’t been fighting him. His aquarium is rather small, less than a gallon because he’s a smaller betta fish.
There’s a couple of possible causes. One of the most common is fake plastic aquarium plants that have sharp edges that can easily snag and tear betta fins. This happened to one of mine back when I didn’t know better.
The other common cause is poor water quality. High ammonia or nitrite levels can easily cause those long delicate fins to lose their structure and start splitting or tearing.
If it it isn’t either of those things, it may be some sort of a disease and you should be on the lookout for other symptoms, such as white fuzz on his body or unusual lethargy or any other strange behavior.
To help him heal, make sure he has plenty of room to swim around, at least 2.5 gallons, and that you keep the temperature about 78-82 degrees. The higher temperature boosts his metabolism and immune system, and will help him heal as fast as possible, not to mention making him happier. A weekly water change will help, especially if you add something like Stress Coat to the water before you add it. It takes the chlorine and chloramines out, but will also help build up a slime coat to protect his scales and fins. Lots of people advocate about 1 tsp per gallon of aquarium salt to help heal, but I’ve found that time, good nutrition, the right temperature, and stress coat are the best ways to heal.
