Betta Fish Eat Bread

My betta fish won’t eat, help?

I got a betta fish yesterday and she’ll take a bite of food and spit it out. I’ve tried tropical flakes, pellets, bread, goldfish food, and even a few bugs. She will bite it and spit it out. I thought she was sick so I took her out and put her in a small bowl. She wasn’t so I put her back in my 10gallon aquarium and she would chase the guppies away and she bit my other females tail. Right now she’s in a bowl. Im not sure what to do, HELP please. If you have any details needed ask me and i’ll add it on additional info. (; thanks

hey hey cheer up! I can relate to you since that kind of thing always happens to me every time I buy a new betta. I have three bettas today and all of them are picky eaters (all bettas are actually). I buy all my bettas from a respected breeder here in our area and he feeds all his stock with live mosquito larvae so when I take them home, they won’t eat for the first few days. Here’s what I do and what you can also do so that your betta would eat.

1.) Ask the pet store what they feed your betta and buy the same betta food.

2.) If you want to feed your betta with what you already have, give him very little pieces that he can get into his mouth easily. By the way, bettas hate flakes. They only eat betta pellets, frozen or dried bloodworms, live mosquito larvae, microworms, and daphnia. When feeding your betta with pellets or bloodworms, soak the food in tank water for 2 minutes before giving it to your fish.

3.) You can place his tank directly beside your other fish tank and let him see the other fish during feeding time so that he’ll realize that what you’re giving is real food. It takes time for them to understand that especially when they are introduced to new food.

4.) You can leave him without food for 3 days. On the 4th day, give him very little pcs of whatever you want to feed him and he’ll surely eat it out of hunger.

Don’t worry, bettas can live without food for a week. And once your fish gets hungry, he’ll eat any betta food you will give him. Happy Betta Keeping!
