Betta Fish Breathing Problems
Betta Fish Breathing Problems
HELP MY FISH IS SICK?
***PLEASE READ*****
So my male betta lives in a 1.8 heated and filtered tank, in which he loves and he is very active in. Yesterday I noticed he was hanging out in the back of his tank more often, and not swimming around. This morning I noticed he had some breathing problems, and he was breathing heavy. He has a little white dot at the first part of his stomach, and a white dot on one of his fins. Also, before he started to put his mouth into the gravel, and his tail would go completely upside down. He hasn’t been doing that in the past hour or so anymore. I feed him 4 pellets 2 times a day; with a few bloodworms and freeze dried brine shrimp in between. I don’t know if he is going to be okay, please tell me what is wrong??
The tank is way too small! A betta needs to be in a 5g tank at the bare minimum! A nearly-2g tank won’t keep your betta happy for the rest of its life. Betta’s can live up to eight years given the proper care, yours will be lucky if it lives for one to two.
Your betta has swim bladder disorder, and is developing ich. Since your tank is under 5g, it is impossible to maintain immaculate water quality, therefore your fish is suffering. You’re also overfeeding your fish, you should only be feeding him two pellets twice a day, four is a good amount. Bloodworms and brine shrimp are a great treat twice weekly.
I would highly recommend you go out and get a proper tank, at least 5g. Then get a filter and a heater. Read up on the nitrogen cycle and cycle your tank, otherwise your fish will die.
