why do bettas always get such a bad reputation?
bettas don’t fight EVERYTHING!! and they don’t deserve a bad rep….as long as you know what kind of fish to pair them with, then they’re perfectly fine with tank-mates! most of the time they’re really subdued and easy going. and they’re fairly clean and easy to care for. if you take the time to take proper care of them, you can keep a betta healthy and happy for years!!
they’re not fashion accessories! they’re living animals and don’t need to be kept in tiny bowls with no heater or filtration and NO ROOM to swim around…that’s almost cruel.
what do other “fish people” think about bettas?
I think that along with goldfish, bettas are probably the most abused fish in the hobby.
Though I’ve had koi and goldfish for years, a betta was my first actual aquarium fish. I love them- they come in such a wide variety of tail shapes and colors that everyone can find one that they like. Their behaviors are hilarious to watch and they do interact with you.
I’m currently taking a speech class and for my final persuasive speech I did mine on why bettas should not be kept in small bowls or vases without filtration and heat. I want to educate as many people as possible on their proper care.
I work for Petsmart and they did not properly educate me on betta care, but most of the books that Petsmart carries on bettas are great. Specifically “Animal Planet’s Aquarium Care of Bettas” which has a chapter titled “Betta Bowl Bunk”.
One of my bettas is in a heavily planted ten gallon tank with four ghost shrimp. I dropped in a catfish wafer for the shrimp and the betta was toying with it. One of the shrimp came out from the plants and scared off the betta. Unfortunately in a community setting the betta usually is the one to take abuse rather than dish it out.
