Trimming lucky bamboo roots?

Ok so I have this beautiful betta and these two marvelous intertwined lucky bamboo plants(Chris and Chrisy), i merged them together in this ok-sized vase(thinking about getting a bigger one).
What I was thinking: Fish goes to the restroom, bamboo takes the nutrients into the roots and grows, absorbs sunlight and gives oxygen to the fish. The world is in perfect harmony..
instead Fred( the betta) frequently got stuck in the roots of the bamboo plants.(they are currently living in different vases).
Though he got stuck, Fred remained healthy, but now he’s getting sicker and sicker, forcing me to put him on meds-this goes against this little rule forever branded/tatooed in my head)
So I really need a way to trim the roots fast.(without killing Chris and Chrisy or anyone for that matter)

It’s a good rule of thumb not to prune more than 1/3 of the roots. Bamboo, of course, is very tough so it probably could take more but it’s better to be safe then sorry.

Xavior The Fish.
