it has been running for about 2-3 weeks

yes you can remove the ammonia bagy
the fluval shouldn’t be taken out until your tank is cycled completely
that way it can establish on the other filters without any problems

Betta Fish Swim Bladder Disorders

Betta Fish Swim Bladder Disorders

HELP! Betta fish problem!?

Earlier on i thought my betta had swim bladder disorder. i treated him and he became one happy little fish. I started feeding him bloodworms. ONLY for two days. He then later starts acting like he used to. I just figured it was swim bladder again because it looked like his stomach was bloated and he wouldn’t eat. I just went to look at him, and he is really pale! It almost looks like his scales are out a bit and he’s “breathing” really hard.

He almost looks near death, but I’m not sure what it could be, so I don’t know if i should have hope.

help! what is it? & what can i do? :[

If his scales are raised then it’s dropsy. I’m so sorry. Dropsy is an awful disease and very hard to treat. The epsom salt bath that another person posted about might help, but more than likely not. There are lots of medications that claim to treat Dropsy, but don’t waste your money. They don’t work. The only thing I ever heard of working was one time someone tried the epsom salt bath at the very very first signs and it seemed to help. So, try that. Keep his water clean and keep him comfortable. If he seems to be suffering, then you may consider euthenizing him.

Betta Fish Guides
what kind of fish co-exist with bettas peacefully?

am planning on planting my 15 gallon aquarium, i use it as a quarantine but i want to expirement with planted tanks, i reserved this beautiful betta at my local fish store that i want to use a focal point for my tank, i also want to put a school of small fishes (tetras maybe?), and some algae eaters.

other than the betta, what types of fish should i get? do i follow the inch per gallon guide or my case is different?

thank you
thank you for the answers, apart from the perianas guy all your opinions are good,

to be truthful, i didn’t fancy caring for plants in an aquarium and all till i saw mr. takashi amano’s aquariums, they just dazzled me, thats why am thinking of starting the hobby,

i just came from the pet store and i found that getting everything together is a bit over my budget, i think by next month my aquarium will be complete, thanks again to all of you,

Ideally, you would keep only the betta. However, they can coexist with a number of fish. Use these guidelines to help you choose another breed:

1. Avoid fish with long, wavy tails like bettas. The fin action will trigger the betta’s attack response. Fan tail guppies and fancy goldfish are examples to avoid.

2. Select fish that are the same size as the betta and will not grow larger. (The betta may perceive small fish as food and larger fish might think the betta is food.)

3. Stay away from aggressive fish like barbs, danos, gouramis, angelfish and catfish.

4. Use as large a tank as possible with as few fish as possible to reduce interactions.

5. Provide plenty of rocks and plants to provide hiding places.
