Fluval Media

Fluval Media
Fluval Media
Too many fish for the filtration? Large fish require more filtration than small fish, is this enough?

The first tank is 90 gallons
Theres 9 cichlid fish. 6 of them are 6-9 inches. They are big but they aren’t aggressive to each other. The filters and the gallons they treat are:
1 Eheim Ecco (bio media and filter, up to 80g)
1 Fluval 305 (bio media and filter, up to 70 g)
2 Magnums 350 (up to 100 g, one with bio media the other with a filter)
1 Hagen powerhead/filter 50 (up to 50 g)
1 Hagen powerhead 110/filter (up to 175 g)
1 300w heater,
1 150 w heater

I also have a 30 gallon with two 5 inch cichlids. The filters are
1 Top Fin 30 (30 gallons)
1 Whisper 20 (20 gallons)
1 Elite Stingray 15 (up to 15 gallons)
1 Hagel powerhead 50/filter (up to 50 gallons)
1 150 watt heater

In terms of water quality, are these tanks set?

With that many filters one would think so…BUT you don’t say what cichlids you have. 9 baby electric yellows would be fine in a 90 gal but 9 baby oscars clearly would not, (you need to consider ADULT size not what they are now) As long as your filtration is over (which it clearly is for both tanks) then yes you could slighly overstock but you will still have to keep up with your weekly maintenance. Edit your Q and i can answer better, but by guessing i would say your in the clear filtration wise. Best of luck Angel

ps. Also when you say up to 50 gallons, that can be taken in two ways.
1) 50 gallons a hour(underfiltered for a 50 gal) or
2) 200 gallons an hour (just right for a 50 gal)
confusing i know but try and be more clear, = )

EDIT: just thought id add, wouldnt it ‘look’ better if say for your 90 gal you got a 150 gal filter instead of mulitple smaller ones? Then youd be over filtered (good thing) and only have one filter. Just thought i add it in. Good luck!

Betta Fish Fungus Treatments

Betta Fish Fungus Treatments

Using fungus clear and maracyn together?

Right now I am currently fighting a columnaris outbreak in my 10 gallon tank (One of the four peppered cories I bought had it, died two or three days after being in my tank, and has contaminated my betta and one other cory). Yesterday I started my fish on a Maracyn treatment. The betta seems to have gotten a little better (His upper lip is still white, and his stomach is still slightly bloated, but he has become active again), but the cory has gotten a lot worse and is just sitting in the same spot at the bottom of my tank. On the back of some Fungus Clear I recently bought, it says that it treats “white or grey cottony growth or patches on any part of the skin”. This sounds just like columnaris, but I was wondering if I could possibly use the two treatments together, or would it be an overload for the fish or perhaps even neutralize one medication or the other?

You should really only treat with one med at a time. (Carbon filter removed)

My question would be why are you treating with a fungus clear? Columnaris is not a fungus but a bacterial infection. Get rid of the fungus clear and only use the antibiotic.

Always know what you are treating prior to treating the fish. This can help to save your fish and cause you less grief.

Antibiotics.
