Do I Need To Add Some Salt To My Betta Tank? And Tank Temp?
I’m familiar with raising fish as I have a 29 gallon tank (guppies & platys) but now my son (which really means me, as he’ll take care of it for a week or so and then get back to being a teenage) has a new tank..
My son purchased a male Betta yesterday and a 2 1/2 gallon tank for him. I wasn’t sure if I needed to add some salt to the water as I do with my own fish tank. I haven’t had a Betta in about 20 years so I don’t remember. Also, what temperature water do they prefer?
I have a barrel cave and 2 small silk plants in the tank. Do I need anything else?
The ideal temperature for a betta is 82°F (28°C). Temperatures lower than 76°F (25°C) render the fish lethargic and illness-prone. If you have a 2.5 gallon tank, you can get a $10 heater from walmart for that size tank, which will regulate the temp at around 76-78 which is fine, that will keep him more healthy and active, and also help fight illness.
A pinch of aquarium salt is good for them every once in awhile, as it helps to promote gill function and fight fungal and bacterial infections. Just read the directions for the salt and try not to add too much at once. Overall, your tank sounds just fine for him.
