Fluval Filter Pad

How do I get my filter to work?
my friend gave me a filter to go with the aquarium he gave me, but i can’t figure out how to get it to work. it sounds like its running, but my tank stayed gross and the filter pad stayed clean, not the way i wanted to go, if i could just get a wonderful person to tell me how to get this fluval 3 (not plus) to work, i would be so happy!!!
it is a fluval 3 (not a plus, just 3)
Hi.
First I would take the whole filter out of the tank, disassemble it and make sure its all put together correctly, no missing or loose parts, at this time I would suggest to clean the magnet and the area around it.
Get a bucket of water or fill a sink with water and submerge only the power head part of the filter, turn it upside down to get any air out of it, now turn it the correct way up and plug it in and turn it on.
There will be no chance of electrocution because the motor is made to be submerged and is covered in resin.
Make sure the power head is pushing a good flow of water out. If not something is wrong and needs to be taken apart and looked at again.
If it is OK turn it off and then reassemble the whole filter submerged in the tank water. Again before connecting the bottom sponge filter part turn the power head over and get any trapped air out. Connect the bottom part of the filter and stick it to the side glass and turn on. Should be all working.
Just a hint. When you are going to clean the filter, get a plastic bag and put it around your filter before you go to remove it from the aquarium. This will help stop any waste it has collected from falling back into the tank water as you lift it. Lift it out of the tank into a bucket and clean it in tank water, do not clean it in new tap water.
Good luck. Hope this helps.
