Online Betta Fish Stores

How to prepare for a betta fish?

I finally convinced my Mom to let me get a beta fish. I find them very beautiful and I’d love to have one. I see them in the little cups in pet stores and vases without filters, but I am sure that they aren’t that happy in there! I don’t want to get a pet without knowing how to care for it, and I’ve been looking at stuff online, but it seems quite varied and I’m not sure what to make up it. If you have any accurate articles to share, I’d very much appreciate it!

So, I’m looking for some advice to prepare for getting one. First of all, what size tank? I know that a large tank is always recommended, but I’m looking for a smallest tank possible in which the betta is still comfortable.

Is there anything I need to do with the tank before I get the betta? I mean besides the basics, like setting up the environment and the filter.

Thanks for any help!

Minimum tank size: 5+ gallons
Heater: Yes
Water temperature: 75-78F
Filter: Yes
Filter current: Low-medium
Food: Pellets or flakes (blood worms can be used as a treat)
Compatible tank mates: Small tetras, ghost shrimp and snails
Compatible tank mates if kept in a 19- gallons: ghost shrimp and snails
Price at pet stores for bettas: $2.50-$20
Peacefulness: Aggressive (their called Siamese Fighting Fish)

Housing: Never keep males in the same tank together… they are aggressive and will fight until one dies or is seriously injured. Male bettas will often “flare” up when he sees another betta or something he finds attractive or threatening. Females can be housed together, but you should never just have 2 females. When you just have 2 females, they will pick on each other… if you have 1 or 3+ females, they won’t harass the same female every time.

Picking a betta out: When looking for a betta, pick one that is:

1) Swimming around in its cup
2) If it’s a male betta, pick one that also has a bubble nest
3) Non of its fins are torn off
4) Doesn’t have any sickness
5) Not dead, lol

if i give my betta fish antibiotics and he does not have fin rot will it hurt him?

it looks like he has fin rot but I’m not completely sure, so shuold i give the fish antibiotics or if you know a better medicine then that would be great! thanks

It won’t hurt him as long as you don’t overdose and you follow the water changing required. There’s actually several varieties of disease that attack fins so proper diagnosis is needed so you know what kind of antibiotics to use. Generally the descriptions on the antibiotics packages tell you the type of symptoms that antibiotic will treat, so check the labels carefully when purchasing. If you have a GOOD fish store in your area (by this I mean a locally owned store with healthy fish, and not a chain store), you may be able find someone there who is extremely knowledgeable and can help you choose the right medicine.
