Red Claw Crab killing my fish?
I have an established 30 gallon aquarium, which just completed the nitrogen cycle with 2 fancy guppies, a male and a female, for starter fish (along with some babies she had).
Last week, we added a Bala Shark, Pictus Cat, and three Otto Cats. At my seven-year-old son’s request, we added a Red Claw Crab.
Within a week, I found one of the Otto Cats and the male guppy dead. My immediate thought was that the crab killed them, so I’ve removed it from the tank. I’ve read that the crabs are docile, and I never actually saw it attack anything, but…
Right now the crab is living in a small Betta bowl with no filtration, but it can climb the gravel to get out of the water. I have two questions:
1. How likely is it that the crab is the culprit over something else?
2. I can do weekly water changes like we do with our two existing Betta bowls, and since it’s alone now, I can even add salt to the water. But I assume the bowl is too small for the crab. How big should its habitat be?
You said your fish were dead, not partially eaten. If the fish are still whole, then the crab didn’t do it. They don’t wait around when it comes to eating. You added 5 fish, and although 5 fish is not that many, you should do a water test ASAP any time a fish dies and you don’t know why. Red Claw crabs are not able to live fully submerged at all times. They spend much of their day dry. You will drown it if you do not provide areas for it to get out. This may be why it tries to escape.
