Betta Fish Habitat
Red Claw Crab killing my fish?

I have an established 30 gallon aquarium, which just completed the nitrogen cycle with 2 fancy guppies, a male and a female, for starter fish (along with some babies she had).

Last week, we added a Bala Shark, Pictus Cat, and three Otto Cats. At my seven-year-old son’s request, we added a Red Claw Crab.

Within a week, I found one of the Otto Cats and the male guppy dead. My immediate thought was that the crab killed them, so I’ve removed it from the tank. I’ve read that the crabs are docile, and I never actually saw it attack anything, but…

Right now the crab is living in a small Betta bowl with no filtration, but it can climb the gravel to get out of the water. I have two questions:

1. How likely is it that the crab is the culprit over something else?

2. I can do weekly water changes like we do with our two existing Betta bowls, and since it’s alone now, I can even add salt to the water. But I assume the bowl is too small for the crab. How big should its habitat be?

You said your fish were dead, not partially eaten. If the fish are still whole, then the crab didn’t do it. They don’t wait around when it comes to eating. You added 5 fish, and although 5 fish is not that many, you should do a water test ASAP any time a fish dies and you don’t know why. Red Claw crabs are not able to live fully submerged at all times. They spend much of their day dry. You will drown it if you do not provide areas for it to get out. This may be why it tries to escape.

Betta Fish Aquariums Dividers

Betta Fish Aquariums Dividers
Betta Fish Aquariums Dividers
set up and division of a 10 gallon tank with betta?

I am getting a 10 gal aquarium this weekend from somebody on freecycle.

I haven’t seen it yet, but I assume it just just the regular rectangle shape.
I have two betta, and i was thinking of putting a divider into the tank, so they could both live in there.
has anyone done this yet?
is there somewhere i can buy a divider, or do I have to make it… and how?
when i get a filter, will it be ok to just have it be on one side?

I am not quite sure how a divided tank works.

I am thinking of cycling the tank before i put the fish in it.
using fishless cycling of course.

any advice in general?

you can buy dividers at pet stores, but you can make one for cheaper. go to your local craft store and get plastic canvas (used to crocheting and stuff). you’ll also need 4 to 6 suction cups. cut the plastic canvas to fit, and the suction cups should have slits down the back, if not just make a slit down it yourself. put these on the side and place it in the tank.

when you get a filter, you can get one for a 10g or two smaller ones and places on on each side, whichever you prefer. one heater will be plenty though.

cycling a tank before had isn’t really needed for bettas, if you want to you can, but you don’t have to.

if you have anymore questions feel free to email me, good luck with your new tank :)

betta fish?

can you put a betta fish in with other fish like goldfish or w.e

Yes, bettas can be kept with other peaceful tropical fishes. Goldfish don’t make a good match for them though as the betta does need considerably warmer water than a goldfish.

It is evident that the land over there is peopled with savages who, probably, never saw white men before. If we treat these young fellows kindly, and send them away with gifts in their hands, we shall, no doubt, make friends of the savages. If we treat them ill, or kill them, their relations will come over, mayhap in swarms, and drive us into the sea. I drop the Swinton law of might being right, a…
